Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (Indonesian: Taman Nasional Bromo Tengger Semeru; abbreviated as TNBTS) is a national park located in East Java, Indonesia, to the east of Malang and Lumajang, to the south of Pasuruan and Probolinggo, and to the southeast of Surabaya, the capital of East Java. It is the only conservation area in Indonesia that has a sand sea, the Tengger Sand Sea (Indonesian: Laut Pasir Tengger), across which is the caldera of an ancient volcano (Tengger) from which four new volcanic cones have emerged.
This unique feature covers a total area of 5,250 hectares at an altitude of about 2,100 meters (6,900 ft). The massif also contains the highest mountain in Java, Mount Semeru (3,676 meters (12,060 ft)), four lakes and 50 rivers. It is named after the Tengger tribe. The explosion of the volcano that created the caldera, happened ca. 45.000 years ago, in an event similar to the Krakatau eruption.
The Tengger Sand Sea has been protected since 1919. The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park was declared a national park in 1982.
Volcanism
The volcanic complex of Tengger forms a condition where a new caldera of volcano forms inside a larger and more ancient caldera. There are five volcanoes inside the Tengger Caldera: Mount Bromo (2,329 m), Mount Batok (2,470 m), Mount Kursi (2,581 m), Mount Watangan (2,661 m), and Mount Widodaren (2,650 m). Mount Batok is the only peak that is no longer active, and is covered in casuarina (Indonesian: cemara) trees. Mount Widodaren, located beside Mount Batok, contains the cave Widodaren, which is considered sacred by local people.
The five volcanoes within the caldera are surrounded by a vast area of sand called the Tengger Sand Sea, which in turn is surrounded by a steep crater wall of the larger Tengger Caldera with height differences of about 200–600 meters (660–1,970 ft)
The journey with around 39.5 km trail through 4 days 3 nights. You will walk around the giant caldera that was formerly the eruption of the Tengger Ancient Volcano. It might not be an easy trail but the result is worth it: to live simply, to move at your own pace and to reconnect with yourself, your loved ones and nature. Maybe even make some new friends along the way. And, of course, have a whole lot of fun along the way. The path takes in truly spectacular scenery that you never seen on another place.

Fjällräven Discovery Indonesia is no walk in the park. Walking 39,5km is not easy. But with the right preparation and a positive mindset, almost anyone can do it. You don’t need to have a lot of experience, more than a willingness to try. However, you should feel comfortable carrying a heavy backpack for days straight on bumpy tracks.
The main thing is to properly walk in your hiking boots and get used to carrying a heavy backpack. Start with easy walks in your local area and build up to over-night trips in more challenging terrain.
We’ve put together a pack list for Fjällräven Discovery Indonesia. But basically, a backpack, tent, sleeping bag, stove and trekking clothes for both rain and sunshine. Don’t forget your flashlight and first aid kit either.
The trail is clearly marked with wood sign and another sign. But you should always have your map handy as a precaution. There are checkpoints every 5km or so where you can get help if you need it.

Yep, we certainly think so. They help balance on slippery sections or make going up and down hills easier too. We recommend a telescopic pole that you can adjust. You can then shorten it when going up the hill and lengthen it when going down. Shock absorbing poles are also a great idea for long distances.
You can reach internet signals in most areas that you will pass through at Fjällräven Discovery Bromo, except for the Lembah Loreng area which will be the camping site on the second night.
Basically, Fjällräven Discovery Bromo 2023 will be held when it enters the dry season. During the day it is predicted to be hot and at night the air is cold to below 7°C. In July 2022, night time temperatures reached 3°C. Please prepare your warmest clothes.
